Mamdani is a putz with a lot of arrogance, hypocrisy (comes from privilege) and, yes, an antisemitic belief system at his core. When he says he does not believe in ANY religious state, I have to wonder why we have not heard from him in the past about the numerous Muslim-run countries in the world? Hmm.
When Sarah Hurwitz told the Never Alone book club that on October 8, 2023, he merely said, "People died," that was enough for me. "People?" "Died?" No mention of the targeted pogrom with horrific elements directed at JEWS.
And don't get me started on Bernie Sanders. You need to trade him in for me. He supports Mamdani and also the Nazi tattoo macho white boy in Maine. He identifies with the plight of Palestinians but not the decades of attacks against Israel.
There used to be a moral compass of some sorts in progressive politics. Now it's all about strategy and greed to win. Who cares about people who hate Jews or are ignorant about Hitler's genocide? No matter, we just want to win. The world is a mess.
Count me in! Re Mamdani, the latest Identity Crisis podcast had a good discussion on him. It doesn’t cover every aspect of the issue, but I appreciated it.
As for Mamdani, he’s going to win, and rather easily. I think that he will be a disaster as a mayor, especially for Jewish residents of the city, but I don’t live there and don’t have a say in whether he gets elected or not.
Wow, Elissa. I've been thinking along these same lines, and have asked friends if they know of anyone creating a list of families who might be in need so that we could pool our funds and help to support them. Donating to food banks and volunteering time is also important, but having that personal connection to know that your funds were truly helping directly would be wonderful. I think anything they'd like to share about their lives or needs would be fine, but I'd do this anonymously as well as long as you or someone else knows these people personally.
Also, for years I've been trying to find a way to screen Four Winters, it played in Seattle years ago at the Jewish Film Fest, I had a ticket but was unable to go so I would be so grateful if the filmmakers were able to arrange a showing for us.
It's interesting that you mention JFS specifically, I've been donating to them annually for years here in Seattle and have participated in events like back to school drives, winter coat drivers, gleaning harvesting, and supplying items for newly arrived immigrants from places like Ukraine, and delivery of Passover packages, etc to local elderly low Jewish people in need, but I've never contacted them directly to help someone I know. I wonder if they would act similarly. I would hope not.
Re: Mamdani, I think it's very clear that his worldview revolves around Israel as the root of all problems, which is textbook conspiracy based antisemitism. He will be a disaster, not only for NYC, but for the Democratic party as a whole. I too am losing sleep over this, especially as I watch liberal, strong Jewish women promote him (you too, Gloria?) I look forward to your thoughts on this. I am no Cuomo supporter, but would vote for him in a heartbeat against Mamdani.
I forgot to mention that the poll isn't working (at least for me) but I would definitely attend, and pay to see the film, my great aunt was a partisan in the Novogrudok and Lida forests with the Bielski brigade and an Russian group who joined them, and I'm always interested to learn more about this history. She was the only survivor of this branch of my family, the only one who jumped out of the train and grabbed under it as it left the station, carrying the rest of the family from the Lida ghetto to Majdanek where they were murdered.
I’ve had nothing but nightmares, too, with Jewish Family Services here in Boulder. I keep asking, like you, What do they do? Collect salaries and have team meetings—seems like the extent of it.
Count me in, I am furloughed from my job with Census but that's only part of my income. I do know that many of the "Jewish" social service agencies have ended up being no longer Jewish but taking what contracts and funds for service they can get. In the Twin Cities, they probably have as many nonJewish clients as Jewish ones, if not more. Unfortunately, I was unsurprised that those you knew were in need got no assistance from them.
Could you also make it possible to give an occasional (one time donation, repeated when we can?) I need help myself but some months are easier than others and I can sometimes spare a fiver.
Great. The hardship will be there anyway and a fiver on its own will make no difference to what I need most but together we can make a difference. What you shared about the AC got to me. As a type 1 diabetic I know what it is like without it, to have fresh varicose veins and faint due to the heat. Also this may not make sense to you, but while it is too late for me to convert, I believe in HaShem and I am trying to live by the Torah. I cannot do so and not love Israel (Medinat and Am) This woman is family. By the way I have been wanting to see 'Four Winters' for months. Please do screen it. Thank you.
Thank you! That means a lot. 🩷 By the way since I have the opportunity to comment, ( I can either buy books by Jewish authors OR pay for substacks but not both, sorry.) I wanted to say for a while how much I enjoy seeing your adorable cats on FB. It is one the things that makes the day better.

I agree about who he is. And I have more to say but want to save it for tomorrow's column.

You know how I feel about mutual aid and support, it's the bridge over troubled waters for many people I know. Count me in.
I’m in.

Really? That's awful -- did you try on your desktop or just your phone? Sometimes I have trouble from my phone but not from my desktop.
Desktop, keeps happening when I reload as well. I will keep trying, but count me in for both.
I’ve had nothing but nightmares, too, with Jewish Family Services here in Boulder. I keep asking, like you, What do they do? Collect salaries and have team meetings—seems like the extent of it.
I feel like we have to be our own Jewish Community Services.
Indeed. I’ve been disabled for 23 years, and I’m still willing to contribute $5 each month to the beautiful program you’ve envisioned. Thank you!

Absolutely, but please, only give if it creates no hardship for you. Truly.

This made me sob. Holy sister, your soul is Jewish, which means it was at Sinai with mine, and in the most essential ways, you are already a Jew.

I might do a trial of enabling comments for everyone unless or until trolls show up.
Don’t feel you have to. I know how draining it can get. The occasional post like this, is enough.
