Judeo-Arabic is a beautiful language. My first husband who is from Turkey speaks Ladino (which, unfortunately, I never learned) but I knew some people who speak Judeo-Arabic as their first language. Among them was the wonderful Israeli writer Sami Michaeli who sadly passed away recently. He was born in Baghdad. I met him at a conference for writers who write in a language that is not their mother tongue. Even though he was a renown Hebrew writer, his first language was Arabic.

Wow, that’s incredible that you got to meet Sami Michaeli. And from what I understand his sister was married to Eli Cohen! We are a strong tribe and we deserve to be acknowledged and seen in our authenticity within our own community. Thank you for sharing.

Danielle was my hebrew school teacher fifteen years ago. She taught us about Chagall and other Jewish artists, shared stories from her LaGuardia days, and, perhaps most impactful of all, was the first person to ever teach me about Israel. We did a project about researching different Israeli cities and then presenting them to the class. I came from a family that didn’t discuss Israel at all; I never went to camp; I was a rare Jew who for most of my childhood was completely disconnected from Israel. But Danielle, who spoke of Israel so fondly, was the one who planted that seed in my mind. When I graduated high school nearly a decade later, I moved to Israel for a year and finally discovered the wonders of the land for myself. Danielle and I stayed in touch throughout my time there. She will always be an important part of my Israel journey. It was so amazing to be able to read her incredible narrative here. Thank you, Danielle, for inspiring me as a child and continuing to do so now by sharing your story.
